ENG 220 - The Bible as Literature3 credit hours - Three hours weekly; one term. This course meets the Arts & Humanities General Education Requirement.
Study the Bible from a literary perspective, with attention to historical and cultural contexts. Explore how the Bible uses literary devices to convey its themes. Analyze how biblical content and structures have influenced subsequent European and American literature.
Prerequisite(s): ENG 101 /ENG 101A or permission of the department chair.

Course Outcomes: Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
- Explain the composition and historical development of the Bible;
- Identify and trace those themes, symbols, and archetypes of the Bible that have influenced subsequent European and American literature;
- Analyze and evaluate selected complete texts to attain an understanding of the Bible’s influence on important European and American works;
- Practice close textual analysis that demonstrates the application of critical thinking skills.
