ENG 200 - Introduction to Creative Writing3 credit hours - Three hours weekly; one term. This course meets the Arts & Humanities General Education Requirement.
Learn the basic craft elements of writing poetry and short fiction. Complete weekly exercises designed to teach the fundamental aspects of reading and writing poetry and fiction. Develop collections of poems and short stories. Practice the workshop method to discuss student writing, foster critical thinking and develop individual styles.
Prerequisite(s): ENG 101 /ENG 101A or permission of the department.

Course Outcomes: Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
- Analyze work written by established and contemporary prose writers and poets and recognize themes and techniques.
- Write competent and original prose and poetry.
- Use a range of literary terms and techniques to discuss their own writing and the writing of their peers.
- Practice disciplined writing habits such as journaling, keeping a daily schedule, drafting, editing, and revising.
- Demonstrate a constructively critical approach to evaluating their own work and the work of their peers.
- Revise their prose and poems by integrating critique from instructor and peers into their revision process.
- Articulate how they are using critique to raise their work to a higher standard
- Evaluate working writers who are reading and staging events within the college and/or the larger community.
- Prepare a submission for literary journals and publications.
