HEA 295 - Care and Prevention of Athletic Injuries

3 credit hours - Three hours weekly; one term.
Learn theoretical and practical methods of preventing and treating injuries, techniques of taping and bandaging, and use of rehabilitative methods.  Understand the mechanisms of injury, strategies for prevention, and techniques to rehabilitate an athlete or client following injury. Lab fee $15.

Prerequisite(s): HEA 101  or permission of the academic chair.

Course Outcomes:
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

1.  Apply anatomical and medical terminology commonly used in athletic training and sports medicine.

2.  Describe mechanisms and extent of injuries common in physical activity, sports, and athletics.

3.  Recognize the signs and symptoms of various athletic injuries and illnesses.

4.  Identify factors that predispose an athlete to injury and utilize strategies to minimize the risk of injury during physical activity.

5.  Describe and demonstrate proper treatment, care, and/or rehabilitation techniques for athletic injuries.

6.  Demonstrate skills in taping, splinting, bandaging, and wrapping techniques for treatment and management of athletic injuries.
