HIS 214 - African American History

3 credit hours - Three hours weekly; one term.
This course meets the Arts & Humanities General Education Requirement.  This course meets the Social and Behavioral Sciences General Education Requirement. This course meets the Diversity Requirement.

Evaluate significant contributions made by African Americans to the American past. Gain oral and visual impressions of important issues and personalities of our nation’s African American heritage through media presentations.

Prerequisite(s): Eligibility for ENG 101 /ENG 101A .

Crosslisted: Also offered as AFA 214 ; credit is not given for both HIS 214 and AFA 214 .

Course Outcomes:
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to: 

  1. Demonstrate an ability to carry out historical analysis and research.
  2. Recognize the major historical contributions and the notable black Americans associated with them.
  3. Critically evaluate competing historical theories in terms of their respective claims about the human condition.
  4. Defend a position of your own using the argumentation/writing skills developed in this class.
  5. Contrast the parallels of historical events with current events as related to African American History.
