HIS 229 - The Vietnam Era in U.S. History

3 credit hours - Three hours weekly; one term.
Examine the Vietnam War and its effect on American society, politics and culture. Explore the conflicting values and political decisions that affected Americans in a time of turmoil and change.

Prerequisite(s): Eligibility for ENG 101 /ENG 101A .

Course Outcomes:
  • Acquire knowledge of what led up to America’s involvement in Vietnam.
    • Know the geography and general history of Vietnam.
    • Understand the conditions that prevailed in Vietnam during the French control.
  • Understand the United States government’s commitment to the War.
    • Understand the US government’s foreign policy at this time.
    • Assess the political instability of Vietnam during the 1960s.
    • Understand early American involvement.
  • Describe the American policies and strategies during the War.
    • Identify American military strategies during the War.
    • Understand the concept of “Vietnamization” regarding the War.
    • Analysis the search for the peace the ultimate Paris Peace Accords.
  • Analyze the affect of the War in America.
    • Understand the early resistance to the War.
    • Analyze the growing dissent in America.
    • Analyze the affects that the War had on music, films, and literature.
    • Analyze the legacy of Vietnam-the plight of the Vietnam veteran.
