HIS 229 - The Vietnam Era in U.S. History3 credit hours - Three hours weekly; one term. Examine the Vietnam War and its effect on American society, politics and culture. Explore the conflicting values and political decisions that affected Americans in a time of turmoil and change.
Prerequisite(s): Eligibility for ENG 101 /ENG 101A .
Course Outcomes:
- Acquire knowledge of what led up to America’s involvement in Vietnam.
- Know the geography and general history of Vietnam.
- Understand the conditions that prevailed in Vietnam during the French control.
- Understand the United States government’s commitment to the War.
- Understand the US government’s foreign policy at this time.
- Assess the political instability of Vietnam during the 1960s.
- Understand early American involvement.
- Describe the American policies and strategies during the War.
- Identify American military strategies during the War.
- Understand the concept of “Vietnamization” regarding the War.
- Analysis the search for the peace the ultimate Paris Peace Accords.
- Analyze the affect of the War in America.
- Understand the early resistance to the War.
- Analyze the growing dissent in America.
- Analyze the affects that the War had on music, films, and literature.
- Analyze the legacy of Vietnam-the plight of the Vietnam veteran.
