HRM 111 - Introduction to the Hospitality Industry

3 credit hours - 45 hours of lecture.
Learn the scope of the hospitality industry, beginning with a look at the history and development of the industry. Major topics include travel and tourism, lodging, food and beverage, managed services, gaming and entertainment, meetings, conventions, and expositions. Learn about current industry trends, ethics, economic impact, social and cultural impact, and political and legal impact which are discussed within each topic.

Course Outcomes:
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

1.    Analyze the key factors responsible for the growth and development of the hospitality and tourism industry.
2.    Describe the current trends and challenges faced by the hospitality and tourism industry, in the context of global, economic, environmental, health and other social concerns.
3.    Discuss the various scopes and classifications of the industry and describe the different types of ownership and development.
4.    Identify career goals and effective strategies for achieving them.
5.    Describe leadership and professional fluency related to the hospitality industry, customer service, teamwork, communication and critical thinking.                                          

6.     Utilize information research skills using library resources and reference books.
