LPN 193 - Adult and Child Health Concepts in Practical Nursing

10 credit hours - 90 hours of lecture, 42 hours of directed lab and 138 hours of clinical per term; one term.
Learn essential principles, concepts and skills necessary for the care of adults and children with acute alterations in body systems. Apply theoretical concepts and perform nursing skills specific to adult and child clients in acute care settings. Lab fee $300. Clinical fee $275.

Prerequisite(s): LPN 180 .

Course Outcomes:
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  • Demonstrates accountability for maintaining standards of LPN practice to include holistic care across health care settings, specific to those working with the specific populations of those adults and children with acute illness.  To include legal/ethical behaviors and life-long learning in concert with the Maryland Practice Act for the Licensed Practical Nurse.
    • Discuss the roles of the practical nurse:  Provider of care, and member within the health care team.
    • In conjunction with the registered nurse, and as a member of the health care team, contribute to the development of the care plan, including nursing priorities with supporting rationale for selected patients.
    • With guidance is able to satisfactorily demonstrate relevant course competencies in the clinical setting.
  • Utilizes appropriate and therapeutic communication to promote positive client outcomes.
    • In conjunction with the registered nurse and as a member of the health care team, identify nursing priorities for selected patients utilizing principles of therapeutic communication.
    • Utilizes appropriate nursing diagnosis, developed by the Registered Nurse (RN), related to therapeutic communication skills when interacting with patient to reach desired health care goals.
  • Assesses holistically and systematically, the health status of adults, children, families and communities to determine health care needs.
    • Identify indication of optimal functioning as well as nursing interventions with rationales in the following systems:  sensorimotor, gas transport, nutrition/regulatory, elimination, protective, psychosocial and perceptual/behavioral that support optimal functioning.
    • Collects data for assessment of individualized health status of selected patients.
    • Utilizes appropriate nursing diagnosis developed by the RN related to assisting selected patients in reaching desired health care goals.
  • Utilizes critical thinking skills within the framework of the LPN nursing process to ensure the delivery of safe, accurate care.
    • Solves problems using basic research, analysis and interpretation.
    • Utilize critical thinking skills in the formulation of selected patient’s care plan.
    • Demonstrates critical thinking and problem solving skills in caring for patients in the clinical setting.
  • Provides evidenced-based nursing care based on the understanding of the sciences, humanities, nursing theory, research and personal experiences that is global, culturally relevant and maintains patient’s rights and dignity.
    • Define the nursing process.

    • Utilizes appropriate teaching/learning principles to aid patient in reaching desired health care goals.
  • Collaborates with clients, families and other members of the health care team to ensure holistic, individualized care with appropriate allocation of human and material resources across the health care continuum.
    • Demonstrate an understanding of roles of members of the health care team.
    • Function as a member of the health care team.
  • Coordinates through direct intervention and delegation of care, the safe and accurate care of multiple clients in diverse health care settings.
    • Integrate principles of drug administration, drug classifications, indications and adverse effects to rationale for administration of specific drugs.
    • Within the health care team, and in collaboration with the RN, identify nursing priorities for selected patients.
    • Discuss the importance of cultural diversity as it influences approaches to health assessment and health care outcomes.
    • With guidance, provide satisfactory care for patients in clinical settings.
