MAS 100 - Introduction to Massage1 credit hour - 15 hours of lecture. Introduces the background, terminology, legal requirements, career opportunities and ethics of therapeutic massage for the professional or nonprofessional. Discusses introductory body mechanics. Helps students determine if they want to pursue therapeutic massage as an avocation or vocation. Prepares the student for MAS 110.

Course Outcomes: Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
1. Define the role of a massage therapist as a member of the health care professions.
2. Demonstrate a working knowledge of the systemic, structural and psychological effects of various massage techniques.
3. Discuss basic cautions and contraindications to massage.
4. Define ethics and discuss the importance of ethical behavior as both a massage therapy student and a professional massage therapist.
5. Define the costs and procedures required to become a massage therapist in Maryland.
