MAT 221 - Fundamental Concepts of Mathematics 14 credit hours - Four hours weekly; one term. This course meets the Mathematics General Education Requirement
Primarily for students in the elementary education and early childhood education programs. Demonstrate efficiency using decimal and non-decimal numeral systems, mental computations, estimation, set theory, functions, algorithms and understand their historical development, logic and number theory. Apply problem-solving techniques within each topic. Although MAT 221 and MAT 222 can be taken in either order, the sequential order is recommended.
Prerequisite(s): Achieve an appropriate score on the mathematics part of the ACT or SAT, or score at an appropriate level on the Mathematics Placement Test, or completion of MAT 012 or MAT 012E or MAT 013B or MAT 037 with a grade of at least C, or successful completion of an approved mathematics preparation course.
Location(s) Typically Offered: Online (OL)
Term(s) Typically Offered: Fall and spring
Course Outcomes: Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Solve a variety of mathematics problems, in context, using multiple problem-solving techniques.
- Analyze examples, proofs, and principles of number theory.
- Illustrate the processes and steps of common arithmetic algorithms.
- Illustrate how to use standard and non-standard algorithms for performing the four basic arithmetic operations.
- Compute in non-decimal and Ancient number systems.
- Illustrate the steps to solve problems involving Integer, decimal, and fraction arithmetic.
- Perform mental calculations and estimations and explain strategies used.
- Apply mathematical symbols, conventions, and terminology correctly.
