MDA 113 - Medical Terminology

3 credit hours - Three hours weekly; one term.
Learn medical terminology, including prefixes, suffixes, word roots and medical abbreviations. Utilize concepts presented in a body systems approach that emphasizes key anatomical and physiological terms. Additional topics include pathology, diagnostic procedures, and treatment modalities.

Course Outcomes:
Upon successful completion of this course, students should be able to:

  1. Describe structural organization of the human body.
  2. Identify body systems.
  3. Describe body planes, directional terms, quadrants, body cavities.
  4. List major organs in each body system.
  5. Identify the anatomical location of major organs in each body system.
  6. Compare structure and function of the human body across the life span.
  7. Describe the normal function of each body system.
  8. Identify common pathology related to each body system including: signs, symptoms, etiology.
  9. Analyze pathology for each body system including:diagnostic measures, treatment modalities.
  10. Identify classifications of medications including indications for use.
  11. Define coaching a patient as it relates to health maintenance, disease. prevention, compliance with treatment plan, community resources, and adaptations relevant to individual patient needs.
  12. Recognize elements of fundamental writing skills.
  13. Identify medical terms labeling the word parts.
  14. Define medical terms and abbreviations related to all body systems.
  15. Students will understand diverse genetic diseases/conditions and incorporate the relevant medical language/verbiage to professionally communicate with patients and people seeking medical care.
