MLT 202 - Clinical Microbiology4 credit hours - 45 lecture and 30 laboratory; one term. Recognize pathogenic bacteria including the characteristics of isolation and identification. Develop a familiarity with virology, parasitology, and mycology. This course prepares students for the clinical practicum in a clinical microbiology laboratory. Lab fee $235.
Prerequisite(s): MLT 101 and BIO 223 both with a C or better, or permission of the MLT Program Coordinator.

Course Outcomes: Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
1. Conduct basic analysis of microbiological specimens, such relating specimens to bacterial species and morphology
2. Perform basic laboratory procedures related to microscopy, such as: media selection and preparation, isolation, staining techniques for bacteria, aseptic technique, sensitivity testing
3. Identify basic bacterial genus and species, such as streptococci and staphylococcus
4. Conduct parasitology testing
5. Describe testing for fungi, yeast and mycobacterium
6. Perform quality assurance procedures for microbiological tests, such as maintenance and proper use of the microscope, preparation of staining materials
7. Discuss and communicate the rationale for culture and sensitivity as related to diagnostics and treatments
8. Demonstrate communication of findings, such as data entry in laboratory information systems, and documentation of specific findings
