MLT 277 - Clinical Chemistry Practicum

2 credit hours - 120 hours clinical; one term.
Apply practical theory and skills learned in previous MLT courses in the clinical chemistry laboratory setting under the supervision of a clinical preceptor. Students will rotate through the areas of a clinical chemistry laboratory either through simulation or at an assigned clinical rotation laboratory or a combination of both. Clinical fee $60.

Prerequisite(s): MLT 203  with a grade of C or better or permission of the MLT Program Coordinator.

Corequisite(s): MLT 206  and MLT 208  or by permission of the MLT program coordinator.

Course Outcomes:
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

1.  Identify the areas in the clinical laboratory setting, including specialty areas

2.  Procure patient/client specimens and process according to procedures and clinical site policies

3.  Perform calculations such as creatinine clearance, LDL cholesterol, anion gap, osmolality gap, and calculations associated with preparing testing solutions or making dilutions.

4.  Document results using the appropriate metric measurements and site specified methods, such as laboratory information systems.

5.  Perform quality checks on automated and manual equipment

6.  Perform macroscopic and microscopic urinalysis testing

7.  Perform immunology testing for antibodies and antigens using commercially prepared solutions.

8.  Maintain federal and state regulations for standard precautions, OSHA, and HIPAA compliance

9.  Perform Point of Care Testing (if performed by laboratory), including performing quality checks, documenting results, and communicating to the provider according to site policy and procedure

10.  Perform clinical chemistry testing using automated and manual equipment and analyze the results.

11.  State the normal and abnormal clinical chemistry laboratory test values relating to body systems and their implications on a patient’s health. 

12. Correlate the effects of healthy vs non healthy choices and their effects on body systems.
