LGS 138 - International Law and Human Rights3 credit hours - Three hours weekly; one term. Introduces students to the scope and sources of international law, jurisdiction and dispute mechanism in the international community. Students will explore fundamental human rights, focusing on genocide, civil rights, and war crimes. Students will also discuss arms control and the laws of war. Lab fee $10.
Prerequisite(s): Eligibility for ENG 101 /ENG 101A .
Note: Credit is not given for LGS 138 and also CJS 138.

Course Outcomes: Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Describe subjects of international law.
- Explain the role of the United Nations and international organizations in making, enforcing and adjudicating international law.
- Define the scope of international law and its enforceability.
- Explain the process of negotiating, ratifying, observing and terminating treaties.
- Compare and contrast principles of international jurisdiction.
- Define fundamental human rights.
- Compare and contrast regional systems of preserving human rights.
- Explain the role of the United Nations in preserving human rights.
- Explain the role of the United Nations and states in peacekeeping.
- Explain the rights of states to use force.
- Apply international legal principles relevant to current issues and events in global politics.
- Prepare legal brief on current issues in global politics, focusing on legal principles, rather than political, economic or policy concerns.
