MUS 161 - Highlights of Music History: Music of the 20th Century

3 credit hours - Three hours weekly; one term.
A look at new ideas and techniques found in 20th century music from the impressionism of Claude Debussy through the minimalism of Philip Glass. A range of contemporary styles is studied.

Course Outcomes:
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

1. Demonstrate through written and oral means a general knowledge of the elements of twentieth century music from 1900 to the present.

2. Articulate knowledge of the tonal, harmonic, and rhythmic elements found in twentieth century music.

3. Demonstrate knowledge of important musical compositions written by twentieth century composers.

4. Articulate an understanding of the relationship between twentieth century music and its social, intellectual, and cultural origins.

5. Be able to trace the changes in musical style and form of twentieth century composers.
