MUS 168 - Highlights of Music History: American Music3 credit hours - Three hours weekly; one term. Survey of American music from 17th century Pilgrim times to the present. Readings and listening include patriotic songs of the American Revolution, music of religious sects, Civil War songs and composers, native and folk music, 20th century jazz and contemporary styles.
Course Outcomes: Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
1. Demonstrate a general knowledge and understanding of the elements of American music from its beginning to the present.
2. Demonstrate knowledge of the elements of native and folk music found in American art music.
3. Demonstrate an understanding and appreciation of important works written by American composers.
4. Demonstrate understanding of the relationship of American music to its social, intellectual, and cultural backgrounds.
5. Demonstrate ability to trace the changes in style and form employed by American composers.
6. Demonstrate skill in analytical listening and writing of American music.
7. Demonstrate skill in critical readings of American music.
