NUR 220 - Nursing of Adult Clients in Health and Illness 2

5 credit hours - 45 hours lecture and 90 hours of directed laboratory per term.
Develop nursing concepts, principles, and skills to provide care that optimizes the health and wellness of two adult clients and one mental health client with alterations in functioning of biopsychosocial systems in mental health and medical-surgical settings that have predictable outcomes. Lab fee $250. Clinical fee $250.

Prerequisite(s): NUR 130  with a grade of C or better.

Course Outcomes:
 

  1.  Care Provider:  The nursing student will continue to develop the utilization of the 5 steps of the nursing process to determine and provide nursing care that  is holistic, systematic, evidence-based, safe and grounded in understanding of the sciences, humanities, cultural diversity and nursing theory to mental health and medical-surgical clients.

  1. Continues to develop evidence-based nursing care based on the application of the sciences, humanities, and nursing theory.
  2. Utilizes and refines the use of the nursing process to provide safe and accurate nursing care to adult medical-surgical, mental health clients and their families in various settings.
  3. Delivers care that is holistic, systematic, evidence-based, culturally sensitive, and safe for adult medical-surgical, mental health clients and their families.

2. Investigator:  The nursing student will continue to develop data analysis, question assumptions, and approach all mental health and medical-surgical clients with a curiosity resulting in safe clinical decisions that improve the quality of care. 

NUR 220 Sub Learning Outcomes for Investigator:

  1. Recognizes, questions, and begins to investigate deviations from optimum health status and uses these to guide safe clinical decisions for the adult medical-surgical and mental health client.
  2. Analyzes variations along the developmental continuum in the individual adult medical-surgical and mental health client. 
  3. Utilizes various health care technologies to promote research, analysis, interpretation, and integration of data that aids in developing individualized nursing care plans for the adult medical-surgical and mental health client in a variety of settings.

3.  Professional:  The nursing student will continue to develop the implementation of the professional role in ways that reflect integrity, responsibility, ethical practices and an evolving identity as a nurse.

    4. Collaborator:  The nursing student will continue to develop collaboration with mental health and medical-surgical clients, families and the health care team to provide coordinated care that is holistic, safe and individualized.

  1. Collaborates with peers, faculty, and increases collaboration with members of the interdisciplinary healthcare team to optimize the understanding of client care in a variety of settings.
  2. Begins to advocate for adult medical-surgical, mental health clients and their families in various settings with appropriate members of the interdisciplinary health care team to provide safe, organized and prioritized care.



    5. Educator:  The nursing student will continue to develop utilization of teaching and learning strategies to promote knowledge that optimizes decisions related to health and wellness for mental health and medical-surgical clients, families, peers and the community.

  1.  Assesses the educational needs, plan and implement appropriate educational strategies that promote positive health and wellness outcomes for adult medical-surgical, mental health clients and their families.
  2. Utilizes technology resources to develop and implement client education.
  3. Evaluates the effectiveness of client teaching and begins to evaluate the learning strategies to modify as necessary to achieve positive health outcomes for adult medical-surgical, mental health clients and their families.

6.  Communicator:  The nursing student will continue to develop utilization of professional and therapeutic communication strategies with mental health and medical-surgical clients, families, and the health care team to promote positive client outcomes.

A. Begins to adapt therapeutic communication strategies for adult medical-surgical and mental health clients of various developmental levels.

B. Begins to adapt professional communication strategies for adult medical-surgical and mental health clients of various developmental levels.

C. Utilizes technology to communicate and document adult medical-surgical and mental health client-related data.
