PBH 102 - Introduction to Epidemiology3 credit hours - Three hours weekly; one term. Gain introductory background to the concepts that embody epidemiology and learn how health data is gathered, analyzed and applied to understanding health issues, and learn methods to measure outcomes. Apply basic skills in quantifying health variables and epidemiological applications.

Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
1. List sources of epidemiologic data and define related measures of morbidity and mortality.
2. Define the term descriptive epidemiology and describe the applications of descriptive epidemiology to the health of populations.
3. Differentiate between association and causation.
4. Define the term analytic epidemiology and differentiate among the types of analytic research designs.
5. Define the term evidence-based public health and discuss its applications.
6. Demonstrate knowledge of the applications of epidemiology to policy development.
7. Identify applications of epidemiology to outbreak investigation, social and behavioral phenomena, and special topics including work and the environment.
8. Demonstrate knowledge of the history, philosophy, and uses of epidemiology.
