PHY 212 - General Physics 24 credit hours - Three hours of lecture and three hours of laboratory weekly; one term. This course meets the Biological and Physical Sciences General Education Requirement.
Examine the topics of thermodynamics, electrostatics, and direct current circuit theory while expanding on the theory from PHY 211 demonstrating these topics application to the calculus-based mathematical analysis of physical problems. Lab fee $10.
Prerequisite(s): PHY 211 and MAT 192.
Crosslisted: Also offered as PHY 212H ; credit is not given for both PHY 212 and PHY 212H .
Location(s) Typically Offered: Arnold Main Campus (MC)
Term(s) Typically Offered: Fall and spring
Course Outcomes: Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Apply the appropriate physical principles, as well as their limitations, to a given scenario.
- Translate a given physical situation or written problem into an organized solution map, including a diagram and a physics-based mathematical description.
- Apply physical models based on advanced mathematical techniques (including, but not limited to, integral and differential calculus) to explain and/or predict physical phenomena.
- Set up experimental apparatus and acquire data to test a scientific hypothesis.
- Use appropriate mathematical methods, consistent with physics principles, to examine laboratory data in order to support or refute a scientific hypothesis.
- Communicate appropriate experimental conclusions based on underlying physics principles and mathematical, graphical, and statistical analysis tools.
