PLS 111 - American Government

3 credit hours - Three hours weekly; one term.
This course meets the Social and Behavioral Sciences General Education Requirement.

An introduction to American politics. Focuses upon such topics as ideology, public opinion, political behavior and voting dynamics, political parties, the presidency, Congress, Supreme Court, foreign policy and national defense.

Prerequisite(s): Eligibility for ENG 101 /ENG 101A .

Course Outcomes:
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  1. Describe factual elements of the U.S. political system
  2. Effectively analyze the U.S. political system
  3. Interpret political information
  4. Discuss political issues, role of social stratification and cultural diversity on American politics and the role of individual citizens in the U.S. political system
  5. Describe linkages between various domains such as arts, science and technology as these relate to public policy
  6. Compare the British political system with the U.S. political system
  7. Analyze American foreign policy
