PHY 211H - General Physics 1 - Honors

4 credit hours - Three hours of lecture and three hours of laboratory weekly; one term.
This is an honors course.

This course meets the Biological and Physical Sciences General Education Requirement.

Discover the fundamental concepts and methods of physics as a basis for further study in science and engineering. Study the classical principles and their application to calculus-based mathematical analysis of physical problems. Analyze topics including mechanics (kinematics, laws of motion, force, momentum, and energy) and basic fluid theory. Lab fee $25.

Prerequisite(s): Eligibility for honors courses; eligibility for ENG 101 /ENG 101A ; completion of MAT 191.

Crosslisted: Also offered as PHY 211 ; credit is not given for both PHY 211H and PHY 211 .

Note: Credit is given for only one of PHY 211 , PHY 211H, or PHY 111 .

Location(s) Typically Offered: Arnold Main Campus (MC)

Term(s) Typically Offered: Fall, spring, and summer

Course Outcomes:
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  1. Apply the appropriate physical principles, while considering their limitations, to a given scenario.
  2. Translate a given physical situation or written problem into an organized solution map, including a diagram and a physics-based mathematical description.
  3. Apply physical models based on advanced mathematical techniques (including, but not limited to, integral and differential calculus) to explain and/or predict physical phenomena.
  4. Set up experimental apparatus and acquire data to test a scientific hypothesis.
  5. Perform experimental analysis including: Analyze data using spreadsheets, linearize data, correctly interpret trend-lines/curves, and perform error analysis/propagation.
  6. Communicate appropriate experimental conclusions based on underlying physics principles and mathematical, graphical, and statistical analysis tools.
