ENG 226H - Ethnic American Literature - Honors

3 credit hours - Three hours weekly; one term.
This is an honors course.

This course meets the Arts & Humanities General Education Requirement.  This course meets the Diversity Requirement.

Explore ethnicity and its relationship to race, culture, and religion. Study ethnic literatures of the United States, including readings from African American, Latino/Latina, Asian American, Native American, Arab American, and Jewish American literatures. Read poetry, fiction, non-fiction and drama by ethnic American writers and discuss these works in their literary and historical contexts, including the social and political circumstances out of which they arise.

Prerequisite(s): Eligibility for Honors courses and ENG 101 /ENG 101A  or permission of department chair.

Note: Complete and present an honors capstone research project that extends beyond the classroom.

Course Outcomes:
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

  1. Identify important ethnic literary traditions within American culture;
  2. Explain racial, ethnic, gender, and class differences within American society;
  3. Identify and explain common themes among the literary traditions and awareness of their distinct cultural values and perspectives;
  4. Identify and explain important works by ethnic writers;
  5. Write analytically about ethnic American literature;
  6. Practice close textual analysis through application of critical reading skills.
