GSS 228H - Literature in English by Women - Honors

3 credit hours - Three hours weekly; one term.
This is an honors course.

This course meets the Arts & Humanities General Education Requirement.  This course meets the Diversity Requirement.

Compare and analyze multicultural literature in English, written by women of diverse regions, cultures, races, sexualities, religions and classes. Explore the relationships between gender and literary form, content, production, evaluation, and interpretation, with attention to historical, social, cultural, and political contexts, as well as literary analysis. Readings include poetry, prose and drama.

Prerequisite(s): Eligibility for Honors courses and ENG 101 /ENG 101A  or permission of department chair.

Crosslisted: Also offered as GSS 228 , ENG 228  and ENG 228H ; credit is given for only one of the following: GSS 228 , GSS 228H, ENG 228  or ENG 228H .

Note: Complete and present an honors capstone research project that extends beyond the classroom.

Course Outcomes:

Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

  1. Identify and explain theoretical approaches to literature developed by feminist literary scholars;
  2. Explain how gender, race, and class inform and influence individual writings by women and women’s literary traditions;
  3. Identify and explain important works written by British and American women writers; 
  4. Explain the relationship of the literature to its intellectual, social, cultural, and political backgrounds;
  5. Analyze how women writers modify traditional literary forms, styles, and themes;
  6. Write analytically about literature;
  7. Practice close textual analysis through application of critical reading skills.
