EMT 270 - Paramedic Capstone7 credit hours - 8 hours of lecture, 60 hours college lab, 204 hours of capstone field experience; nine week course; one term. Utilize critical thinking skills, comprehensive history and physical assessment within their patient interactions to formulate and institute an appropriate field impression and treatment plan for various diseases and injuries. Identify factors affecting the health and health needs of a patient. Integrate team leadership, patient advocacy and entry-level practice as a paramedic professional. Demonstrate skill mastery as an entry-level paramedic provider in scenario based testing. Demonstrate effective communications in a manner that is culturally sensitive and intended to improve the patient outcome. Practice selected procedures on each other during college lab. Lab fee $300; Clinical fee $100.
Prerequisite(s): EMT 215 with a grade of C or better. Typically offered spring and summer terms.
Note: Mandatory attendance is required for all college lab, clinical and field rotations. Missed labs or field rotations are made up at the student’s expense or will result in failure in the course.
Course Outcomes:
- Define the roles and responsibilities of a paramedic within an emergency medical services system.
- Communicate effectively to handle emergency incidents in diverse populations and situations.
- Effectively communicate in a manner that is culturally sensitive and intended to improve patient outcome.
- Communicate effectively as team leader for proper extrication and treatment modalities.
- Communicate verbally, non-verbally, and in writing in using medical terminology and appropriate documentation of field treatment plans for patients experiencing medical or traumatic incidents.
- Ensure the safety of the rescuer and others during an emergency.
- Identify text-based and electronic information for research and demonstrate an ability to integrate into a comprehensive field treatment plan.
- Perform a comprehensive history and physical examination to identify factors affecting the health and health needs of a patient.
- Formulate a field impression and treatment plan based on an analysis of comprehensive assessment findings, anatomy, physiology, pathophysiology, and epidemiology.
- Relate assessment findings to underlying pathological and physiological changes in a patient’s condition.
- Integrate and synthesize the multiple determinants of health and clinical care.
- Perform health screening and referrals.
- Safely and effectively perform all psychomotor skills within the National EMS Scope of Practice Model and State scope of Practice at the paramedic level.
- Use advanced life support monitoring equipment correctly and appropriately.
- Function as the team leader of a routine, single patient advanced life support emergency call for a culturally diverse population across the age spectrum.
- Identify causes/consequences of stress and integrate positive self-care into daily routine.
- Solve medication calculations problems to determine correct dosage.
- Function within the ethical and legal framework of the paramedic scope of practice.
- Integrate pathophysiological and psychosocial principles to adapt the assessment and treatment plan for varied age group patients from diverse backgrounds, ethnic origins and religious beliefs.
- Perform patient care procedures to meet National Paramedic Psychomotor Competency Portfolio requirements.
- Evaluate role playing exercises.
