ART 185 - Introduction to Art History3 credit hours - Three hours lecture weekly; one term. This course meets the Arts & Humanities General Education Requirement.
Study the history of art with a global perspective. Learn about painting, sculpture, architecture and other forms of art from pre-historic to modern times. Through lectures, discussions, and class trips, students will be exposed to artworks that shape and inform our world.

Course Outcomes:
- Explain the social and historical forces that designate artwork as historically significant;
- Develop a model for the creation of creative work that exhibits historical sense across two geographical regions;
- Identify personal experiences that equate art with economic entitlement and stature;
- Compare stereotypes of racial, ethnic, regional, and social communities with the ways in which these communities are commonly depicted in works of art;
- Use a comparative framework to analyze “native” and “emigrated” work;
- Identify the role that museums play in the curation and conservation of art and how they create distinctions between types of art according to social position;
- Develop universally equivalent standards of value for folk, popular, and professional artwork;
