HIS 142 - Introduction to Latin American History3 credit hours - Three hours lecture weekly; one term. This course meets the Arts and Humanities General Education Requirement.
Examine Latin American history from the pre-Columbian period through colonization and the Age of Independence (1810-1825) to 20th-century revolutions and recent political, economic, and social trends. Analyze major political and economic events and social and intellectual forces that affected the origins and development of the Latin American states and region.
Prerequisite(s): Eligibility for ENG 101 /ENG 101A .

Course Outcomes: Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
1. Evaluate and synthesize primary and secondary sources to compose essays pertaining to Latin American history.
2. Explain governing institutions and the ideas, issues and history that shaped the development of the Latin American region through the analysis of oral and written accounts of the past and present.
3. Discuss the general process of conquest, colonialism and independence of the Latin American region and its influence on the major economic, political and social features of that community.
4. Describe the issues that divided and united the societies and nations within the Latin American region and discuss the revolutionary ideologies that facilitated change in the Latin American region.
