GEO 242 - Foundations of Cartographic Design3 credit hours - Two hours of lecture and one hour of lab weekly; one term Produce digital and hardcopy maps through applying concepts and theories of Cartography, the art and science of map-making. Using Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and other technologies, learn how to make effective maps and data visualizations for a variety of audiences and purposes. Gain an awareness of the historical and contemporary relationship between maps and society while developing customized visualizations of human and environmental phenomena.
Prerequisite(s): Eligibility for ENG 101 /ENG 101A .
Note: Students are recommended to take GEO 240 prior to or concurrently with GEO 242.
Course Outcomes:
- Categorize and describe different types of maps and provide examples of how they are used.
- Identify and select an appropriate geographic referencing system, data model, map scale, and symbolization to communicate geographic information for a given purpose.
- Apply cartographic principles in the design and production of hard copy and digital maps.
- Construct ancillary data visualizations, such as charts, graphs, and diagrams, and incorporate these in the design of map products.
- Analyze spatial phenomena through effective use of cartographic visualization technologies.
