GEO 242 - Foundations of Cartographic Design

3 credit hours - Two hours of lecture and one hour of lab weekly; one term
Produce digital and hardcopy maps through applying concepts and theories of Cartography, the art and science of map-making. Using Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and other technologies, learn how to make effective maps and data visualizations for a variety of audiences and purposes. Gain an awareness of the historical and contemporary relationship between maps and society while developing customized visualizations of human and environmental phenomena.

Prerequisite(s): Eligibility for ENG 101 /ENG 101A .

Note: Students are recommended to take GEO 240  prior to or concurrently with GEO 242.

Course Outcomes:
 

  1. Categorize and describe different types of maps and provide examples of how they are used.
  2. Identify and select an appropriate geographic referencing system, data model, map scale, and symbolization to communicate geographic information for a given purpose.
  3. Apply cartographic principles in the design and production of hard copy and digital maps.
  4. Construct ancillary data visualizations, such as charts, graphs, and diagrams, and incorporate these in the design of map products.
  5. Analyze spatial phenomena through effective use of cartographic visualization technologies.
