DHY 206 - General and Oral Pathology

2 credit hours - Two hours of lecture weekly; one term.
Examine general pathology with a focus on oral pathology to recognize abnormalities extra- and intraorally. Describe the connection between systemic health and oral health pertaining to pathology and risk factors that lead to higher prognosis of cancer. Define the etiology, pathogenesis, clinical and microscopic signs and symptoms, differential diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up and prognosis related to dental care.

Prerequisite(s): DHY 120 , DHY 122  and DHY 124  with a grade of C or better in each course.

Corequisite(s): DHY 200 , DHY 202 , and DHY 204 .

Course Outcomes:
  1. Define various normal and abnormal lesions and conditions seen clinically and/or radiographically.
  2. Demonstrate an understanding of pathology related to inflammation, repairs and immunity.
  3. Differentiate normal and abnormal lesions based on clinical characteristics.
  4. Identify suspicious lesions by clinical characteristics for documentation and to report to supervising dentist.
  5. Describe the anatomy and physiology and the changes that occur in the oral mucosa.
  6. Examine situations that may impact dental care due to effects of medications.
  7. Describe the structures, function, and the role of the temporomandibular joint and oral cavity anatomy.
