SPA 141 - Elementary Spanish for Health Care 2

3 credit hours - Three hours lecture weekly; one term.
This course meets the Arts and Humanities General Education Requirement.

Build upon knowledge learned in SPA 140 or SPA 111 with emphasis on speaking, reading and writing in a healthcare environment.

Prerequisite(s): SPA 111 or SPA 140 or one year of high school Spanish or permission of department chair.

Crosslisted: Also offered as SPA 141H; credit is not given for both SPA 141 or SPA 141H.

Note: Credit will not be given for both SPA 141 and SPA 112  or SPA 141 and SPA 112H . Not for native speakers.

Course Outcomes:
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

1. Identify the main idea and some pieces of information within written and spoken conversations about familiar topics and short informational or fictional texts with an emphasis on medical topics.

2. Communicate in spontaneous spoken conversations on both familiar, every day and medical topics, using a variety of practiced, memorized, or original phrases, simple sentences, and questions.

3. Present information on familiar, medical, and cultural topics using simple sentences and a variety of practiced, memorized, and some original phrases through spoken and written language.

4. Combine a variety of grammar structures and vocabulary to respond to a range of high novice-level writing and speaking prompts related to health care interactions.

5. Formulate comparisons between the cultural products, practices, and perspectives of Spanish-speaking cultures and those of my own.
