ENG 218 - Introduction to U.S. Latinx Literature3 credit hours - Three hours lecture weekly; one term. This course meets the Arts & Humanities General Education Requirement. This course meets the Diversity Requirement.
Explore U.S. Latinx literature and cultural production. Engage in close reading of works by Mexican American, Puerto Rican, Dominican American, Cuban American, and U.S. Central American writers. Analyze works of poetry, fiction, non-fiction, and other genres in their literary, historical, and political contexts.
Prerequisite(s): ENG 101 /ENG 101A or permission of the department chair.
Course Outcomes: Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Identify and analyze literary forms and themes in U.S. Latinx literature.
- Identify and analyze the specific social, historic, and cultural contexts of U.S. Latinx literature.
- Identify and analyze the intersections of race, ethnicity, gender, sexuality, class, and nationality in works of U.S. Latinx literature.
- Write analytical essays about U.S. Latinx literature.
- Practice close textual analysis through the application of critical reading skills.
