MDC 201 - Advanced Medical Coding

3 credit hours - Three hours weekly; one term.
Formerly HIT 221 - Advanced Coding

Apply ICD diagnostic and procedural coding and CPT/HCPCS coding to higher level case scenarios. Practice the application of diagnosis and procedure codes validating coding accuracy using clinical information found in the health record.  Apply and promote ethical coding standards while adhering to current regulations and established guidelines in code assignment. Demonstrate encoder software and practice applications.

Prerequisite(s): MDC 101 , MDC 103  (formerly HIT 217), and MDC 105  (formerly HIT 218), with a grade of C or better in each course; or permission of the program coordinator. 

Corequisite(s): MDC 203  (formerly HIT 222) and MDC 275  (formerly HIT 275).

Note: Typically offered OL; fall and spring terms.

Course Outcomes:

1. Evaluate health record documentation and validate diagnosis and procedure coding accuracy using clinical information found in the health record.

2. Resolve discrepancies between coded data and supporting documentation.

3. Apply the appropriate coding conventions when coding a disease or procedure and determine the proper code(s) and DRG assignment.

4. Demonstrate the ability to assign CPT and HCPCS codes.

5. Perform Evaluation and Management Coding.

6. Demonstrate the ability perform Evaluation, Management Coding and code ICD-10-PCS codes.
