MDC 275 - Medical Coding Practicum

2 credit hours - 90 hours virtual practicum experience.
Formerly HIT 275 - Medical Coding Practicum

Demonstrate practical skills and knowledge in coding principles needed in medical offices, clinics, hospitals, and insurance companies. Students will observe and perform the coding of health data, the retrieval and analysis of medical records, the abstraction and interpretation of health data, and the management of health data. Lab fee $120.

Prerequisite(s): MDC 101 MDC 103  (formerly HIT 217), and MDC 105  (formerly HIT 218) with a grade of C or better in each course; or permission of the program coordinator.

Corequisite(s): MDC 201  (formerly HIT 221) and MDC 203  (formerly HIT 222).

Note: Typically offered OF; fall and spring terms.

Course Outcomes:
 

  1. Describe elements of communication, including medical terminology in a professional health care setting.
  2. Describe ICD sections in the manual.
  3. Define modifiers and the resource-based relative value scale.
  4. Differentiate between HCPCS levels I - III.
  5. Describe the importance of national credentialing and delineate the elements/requirements for AAPC national certification.
  6. Demonstrate competency in clinical coding in health and medical areas and describe the reasoning behind the proper coding sequence in a virtual practicum experience.
