SGT 200 - Surgical Technology Clinical 1

7 credit hours - 260 hours of clinical laboratory per term.
Formerly SGT 200 Surgical Technology Practicum 1

Learn the basic format and procedures used in the operating room. Includes step by step experience to provide the student with broad knowledge base and to perform the skills needed to perform as a surgical technologist. Lab fee $300. Clinical fee $200.

Prerequisite(s): SGT 100 , and SGT 102  with a grade of C or better.

Corequisite(s): SGT 108 .

Note: Typically offered OF; spring term.

Course Outcomes:
  • Compare and contrast the various surgical pathologies of each body system.
    • Analyze pathology in relationship to the body’s response and adaptation to injury.
    • Analyze surgical cancer treatments.
    • Examine hemodynamic disorders, inflammation and infection.
  • Calculate, prepare and use medications safely in the care of the surgical patient.
    • Calculate medication conversions and dosages.
    • Apply general terminology to medication use.
    • Prepare and manage medications and solutions.
  • Analyze the principles of anesthesia administration.
    • Contrast and compare methods, agents, and techniques of anesthesia administration.
    • Correlate anesthesia monitoring devices with patient homeostasis.
    • Explain anesthesia complications and interventions.
  • Apply electrical knowledge to safe patient care practices in the OR.
    • Define and identify the terms related to electricity and electrical flow.
    • Identify the basic principle of electrical flow and the types of currents.
    • Define the components of an electrical receptacle.
  • Apply the principles of physics to safe patient care practices in the OR.
    • Define the terms related to physics.
  • Apply the prinicples of robotics to safe patient care practices in the OR.
    • Discuss the basic concepts related to robotics.
    • Describe the concepts of geometry that are used in the desin of surgical robots.
    • Identify the basic components and mechanisms of the robotic system.
    • List the clinical applications of robotics in the OR.
