DHY 200 - Dental Hygiene Theory 42 credit hours - Two hours lecture weekly; one term. Discuss dental hygiene theory and practice including root planing, subgingival irrigation, powered scaling, air polishing, and case presentation. Describe the care and clinical management of clients with special needs and review the essential components and clinical procedures performed in the various dental specialties.
Prerequisite(s): DHY 120 , DHY 122 and DHY 124 with a grade of C or better in each course.
Corequisite(s): DHY 202 , DHY 204 , and DHY 206 .
Course Outcomes: 1. Describe dental hygiene theory and clinical practice related to procedures addressing tooth cleaning and polishing.
2. Analyze the physical, mental, medical, social and dental needs of individuals with special needs.
3. Plan, implement and evaluate a community-based prevention program for individuals with special needs.
4. Discuss the role of the dental team in substance abuse counseling.
5. Develop a scientific based poster presentation describing a relevant public health disparity for presentation to a professional audience.
