DHY 204 - Dental Hygiene Pharmacology2 credit hours - Two hours of lecture weekly; one term. Examine basic pharmaceutical medicine related to the practice of dental hygiene. Discuss general principles, medications that alter dental treatment, and dental hygiene considerations. Describe drugs that are commonly used in dentistry and potential adverse reactions, characteristics and mechanisms of drug actions, pharmacokinetics, clinical pharmacokinetics, and routes of administration.
Prerequisite(s): DHY 120 , DHY 122 , and DHY 124 with a grade of C or better in each course.
Corequisite(s): DHY 200 , DHY 202 , and DHY 206 .
Course Outcomes:
- Discuss definitions and classifications, clinical manifestations, and toxicologic evaluation of drugs.
- Recognize adverse drug effects and dental hygiene considerations for adverse drug reactions.
- Describe drugs commonly used in dentistry to benefit patient care or during treatment management.
- Describe drugs that may alter the treatment of dental or dental hygiene care.
- Discuss special situations that may impact dental care due to the influence of certain drugs or medications.
- Apply prevention strategies by analyzing patient medical histories and using consultations with physicians.
- Categorize patients by the American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) physical status classification system to minimize potential for a medical emergency.
- Assess the patient’s medical/dental/psychological history and measure vital signs.
