GSS 222 - Psychology of Women3 credit hours - Three hours weekly; one term. This course meets the Diversity Requirement.
Cover female development from childhood and adolescence through adulthood and old age. Study gender differences and stereotypes, sexuality, love relationships and violence against women. Develop a theoretical and practical understanding of the psychology of women.

Course Outcomes:
- introduce students to the scientific study of gender behavior and roles;
- acquire knowledge of women’s gender role identities and gender schemas;
- develop understanding and awareness of power and privilege associated with gender;
- articulate the main points related to social construction of gender and gender-related differences in behavior;
- explore some major psychological issues that concern women such as gender discrimination, social and biological determinants of behavior, gender stereotypes, sexuality, health issues, and violence against women;
- describe classic and current theories regarding the psychological development and socialization of girls and women;
- critically evaluate psychological theory and research examining gender-related differences in a variety of areas, including cognitive abilities and social behavior;
- describe the biological and psychological bases of relationship dynamics and sexuality, particularly as they relate to cultural constructions of gender;
- understand and articulate the interactive influence of age, race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, ability, and class on girls’ and women’s psychological development across the life-span;
- provide the student with a framework for self-exploration and self-understanding.
