MAT 223 - Fundamental Concepts of Mathematics 34 credit hours - Three hours weekly; one term. This course meets the Mathematics General Education Requirement
Primarily for students in the elementary education program. Topics include data collection, sampling, interpreting data, displaying data, correlation and regression, distributions, confidence intervals, probability, and the use of technology. Principles and standards of national mathematics organizations are applied to probability and statistics.
Prerequisite(s): MAT 221 or MAT 222 or equivalent.
Note: Credit is not given for both MAT 223 and MAT 135 .

Course Outcomes: Upon successful completion of this course, a student will be able to:
- Display, summarize, and analyze data including with the aid of technology.
- Perform descriptive statistics and regression analysis on data.
- Apply measures of likelihood and probability theory in specific contexts.
- Draw appropriate conclusions from probability distributions, such as discrete, binomial, and normal distributions.
- Apply current tools of inferential statistics to sample mean and proportion, such as performing a hypothesis test using the p-value.
- Communicate statistical procedures, analyses, and conclusions using mathematical language and notation as well as common language.
