LPN 194 - Women, Newborns, Mental Health and Integration of Concepts in Practical Nursing9 credit hours - 90 hours of lecture, 30 hours of directed lab and 105 hours of clinical per term; one term. Learn essential principles, concepts and skills for providing care for the childbearing family, the mentally ill, and adults with emergent needs. Explore the roles of leadership and delegation. Integrate the role of the Practical Nurse through opportunities to provide client care in acute, community, and/or long-term settings. Lab fee $350. Clinical fee $275.

Course Outcomes: Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Demonstrates accountability for maintaining the standards of practice to include holistic care across the settings specific to childbearing families, individuals who require interventions for mental health concerns and those in sub-acute care. Includes the management and leadership experiences as well as life-long learning in concert with the Maryland Nurse Practice Act for the Licensed Practical Nurse.
- Discuss the roles of the practical nurse: Provider of care and member within the health care team.
- Within the health care team, develop a written nursing care plan including appropriate and relevant nursing diagnosis with supporting rationale for selected patients within the scope of the Standards of PN practice and under the supervision of the RN.
- With guidance, is able to satisfactorily demonstrate relevant course competencies in the clinical setting.
- Utilizes appropriate and therapeutic communication to promote positive patient outcomes.
- As a member of the health care team, develops a care plan for selected patients utilizing principles of therapeutic communication within the scope of the standards of PN practice and under the supervision of the RN.
- Utilizes appropriate nursing diagnosis developed by the RN related to therapeutic communication skills when interacting with a patient to achieve desired health care goals.
- Assess holistically and systematically, the health status of individuals, families and communities to determine health care needs.
- Identify indication of optimal functioning as well as nursing interventions with rationales in the following systems: sensorimotor, gas transport, nutrition/regulatory, elimination, protective, psychosocial and perceptual/behavioral.
- Assesses individualized health status of selected patients.
- Utilizes appropriate nursing diagnosis developed by the RN related to assisting selected patients in reaching the desired health care goals.
- Utilizes critical thinking skills within the framework of a three step nursing process to ensure the delivery of safe, accurate care, while recognizing the Scope of Nursing Practice appropriate for the PN and safely practicing within licensed guidelines.
- Solves problems using basic research, analysis and interpretation.
- Utilize critical thinking skills in the formulation of selected patient’s care plan.
- Demonstrate critical thinking and problem solving skills in caring for patients in the clinical setting.
- Provides nursing care based on the understanding of the biological and behavioral sciences, nursing theory, evidenced based practices, National Safety Standards and personal experiences that is global, culturally relevant and maintains patient’s rights and dignity.
- Define the nursing process.
