MDA 114 - Diseases of the Human Body3 credit hours - Three hours weekly; one term. Investigate disease pathology and appropriate terminology. Discuss disorders that affect the whole body, such as immune disorders and neoplasms; thereafter, diseases that primarily affect a specific body system such as cardiovascular, gastrointestinal, renal and dermatologic disorders. Focus on definition, causes when appropriate, signs and symptoms, clinical findings, treatment and aspects of patient teaching.

Course Outcomes: Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
1. Examine changes in body functioning resulting from disease processes.
2. Correlate the significance of poor lifestyle habits related to health, i.e., smoking, alcohol, drugs, improper rest, exercise, or lack of and food abuse.
3. Describe the physical responses of stress and their relationship to diseases processes.
4. Apply pharmacology essentials to drug treatment and diagnostic modalities.
5. Demonstrate an understanding of the major body organ systems and their relationship to disease states, disease prevention and health promotion.
6. Identify the cycle of infection including transmission and treatment.
7. Evaluate initiatives currently in place to reduce or eliminate highly contagious diseases.
8. Analyze disease entities identified as leading causes of death worldwide.
9. Identify the health professional’s role in disease identification.
10. Describe the health professional’s role in the treatment of diseases.
11. Describe various health professionals’ roles in health promotion.
