MDA 115 - Administrative Medical Assisting 1

3 credit hours - Three hours weekly; one term.
Review the professional career responsibilities of and practice the skills performed by administrative medical assistants. Utilize competency-based exercises including simulations of skills used in the administration of the physician’s office and other types of healthcare settings, such as: interpersonal communication activities, records management, patient scheduling and financial transactions.

Corequisite(s): MDA 113 .

Course Outcomes:
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  • Perform Clerical Functions
    • Complete all components for scheduling a patient appointment using simulation software, such as: patient demographics, chief complaint, medical insurance eligibility, and time required related to type of appointment
    • Maintain client/patient medical record within guidelines/protocols
  • Demonstrate bookkeeping procedures
    • Prepare a bank deposit including: cash, checks, and money orders
    • Perform accounts payable and accounts receivable accounting functions
  • Process insurance claims
    • Enter insurance codes related to specific procedures and diagnosis using ICD-9-CM and CPT manuals
    • Utilize software for insurance eligible and claim batching for payment
  • Demonstrate all forms of professional communication
    • Use all appropriate methods of verbal communication, such as: closed questioning, opening questioning, leading, and guiding
    • Demonstrate professional telephone techniques, such as: stating physician office, name, and clarifying information
    • Interact by professional written communication with physicians, vendors, clients, patient and staff with formal guidelines for document preparation
  • State legal concepts for the medical assistant
    • Maintain confidentiality and patient privacy as related to HIPAA, using state and federal guidelines
    • Describe the concept of respondant superior and scope of practice for medical assistants
  • Perform inventory of office/clinical supplies
    • Differentiate between incidental supplies, and capital purchases, such as: pens, paper, and office supplies
    • Establish PAR levels for clinical supplies and system for maintaining levels, such as: automated ordering, peak levels for supplies, and specified ordering time frames
