SGT 209 - Surgical Technology Perspectives1 credit hour - 15 hours of lecture; eight weeks. Analyze current issues and trends that impact the profession of surgical technology.
Prerequisite(s): SGT 108 and SGT 200.

Course Outcomes:
- Prepare for transition from the role of student to that of certified surgical technologist.
- Define the role of the Professional Surgical Technologist in the current health care setting.
- Develop and implement a plan for preparing for the certification exam.
- Identify key components of performance appraisal.
- Identify factors that will assist the surgical technologist in reaching the highest level of potential.
- Prepare a resume, cover letter and follow up letter with documentation of accomplishments.
- Identify techniques for job interviewing and interview preparation.
- Identify options for advanced education and certification in surgical technology.
- Analyze the relationship between accountability and liability for one’s actions in professional surgical technology.
- Discuss current surgical technology workplace issues including occupational health and safety issues.
- Identify strategies to promote patient safety in surgical technology.
- Discuss current issues and trends in the profession of surgical technology.
- Discuss current trends in medicine as they impact surgical technology.
- Identify issues related to the role of the novice surgical technologist.
- Acquaint self with the current economic/political climate, which impacts the profession.
- Analyze practice situations which involve the application of selected ethics principles and utilization of an ethical decision-making framework in surgical technology practice.
