COM 230H - Persuasive Message Strategies - Honors

3 credit hours - Three hours weekly; one term.
This is an honors course.

Learn cutting-edge persuasive communication strategies used in interpersonal communication, including the areas of advertising and political campaigns. Examine current research on persuasion and how the media frames issues. Gain the knowledge and skills to create and evaluate persuasive messages.

Prerequisite(s): Eligibility for Honors courses.

Note: Eligibility for ENG 101  or ENG 101A  is strongly recommended.

Course Outcomes:
 

  1. Explain a variety of classical rhetorical theories of persuasion;
  2. Explain a variety of contemporary social science theories of persuasion;
  3. Analyze how persuasion functions in a variety of contexts;
  4. Use appropriate, effective, ethical uses of persuasion;
  5. Research, organize, and prepare a written and oral presentation that is appropriate for its purpose, context, and audience.
