SGT 201 - Surgical Technology Clinical

5 credit hours - 240 hours of clinical laboratory per term.
Perform procedures with the surgical team in an operating room environment using a preceptor-based model. Apply the theories and skills learned in previous surgical technology courses to the care of the surgical patient and begin to develop a portfolio of surgical procedures across the specialties. Lab fee $200.

Prerequisite(s): SGT 100  and SGT 102  with grades of C or better.

Corequisite(s): SGT 108 .

Course Outcomes:
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  1. Perform perioperative case management duties in an organized and timely manner.
  2. Demonstrate the ability to apply the principles of asepsis to impeccable practice of sterile technique.
  3. Demonstrate the ability to apply safety procedures to the safe care of the surgical patient and to the management of the operative field.
  4. Apply critical thinking and appropriate actions to the intraoperative case management process.
  5. Perform appropriately as a novice surgical technologist in the first or second scrub role.
  6. Apply feedback from preceptors, clinical instructors, and self-reflections to improve practice.
  7. Exhibit positive professional behaviors expected by the surgical technology program and future employers.
