DHY 104 - Oral Histology and Embryology2 credit hours - Two hours of lecture weekly; one term. Describe the development, eruption, function, and basic morphological characteristics of the permanent and deciduous human dentition, and the growth and development of the face and oral cavity. Identify the process of histology and embryology of the face and oral and nasal cavities, the teeth, and the various components of the teeth and surrounding tissues.
Prerequisite(s): Acceptance into the Dental Hygiene Program.
Corequisite(s): DHY 100 , DHY 102 , DHY 106 , DHY 108 .
Course Outcomes:
- Identify the anatomical structure of the oral cavity and development of the dentition, oral cavity, head, and neck.
- Explain in detail the growth and development of the orofacial structures.
- Describe the structures that comprise the tooth and the periodontium and their function.
- Identify the phases in tooth eruption and the changes that occur in the surrounding structure.
- Examine the structures, function, and the role of the temporomandibular joint.
- Discuss the types and functions of salivary glands, tonsils, and oral mucosa.
- Discuss the origin and impact of biofilm on teeth.
