About the Visual Arts and Humanities Department
Purpose: Prepares students for transfer to a four-year program in art history, museum studies or education. Upon completion of the bachelor’s degree, students with teaching certification will be eligible for a job as an art history teacher at a secondary institution (middle or high school). Those who wish to teach at a post-secondary institution (college or university) or work at a museum should pursue at minimum a master’s degree after graduation from the four year school.

Visual Arts Transfer Program Core Courses
The program core for this degree consists of ART 100 (satisfied through the Arts & Humanities General Education Requirement as listed below); ART 106 (satisfied through the Technology Requirement as listed below); and ART 125 (satisfied through the Studio Art requirement as listed below). Students must complete all of these courses with a grade of C or better. English Composition: 6 credits
Arts and Humanities: 6 credits
Students must complete ART 100- Two-Dimensional Design and a course in a second discipline to fufill this requirement. Refer to Arts and Humanities General Education Courses for a list of approved courses. Students are encouraged to enroll in at least one elementary or intermediate World Language course.
Additional General Education Requirements: 3 credits
Area of Concentration: 29 credits
Art History Courses: 12 credits
Technology Requirement: 3 credits
All students in associate degree programs must satisfy the Technology Requirement. In many cases, students may satisfy this requirement simultaneously as they satisfy a general education course requirement or with an elective. Satisfied by ART 106 . Electives: 14 credits
One of the electives must include ART 125 - Drawing 1 to fulfill the program core. For the remaining credit hours, students are encouraged to check their transfer institution’s requirements or to contact the Art History and Museum Studies Program Coordinator before selecting electives. No more than 3 credit hours of physical activity courses may be used as electives.

All students in associate degree programs must satisfy the Diversity Requirement . In many cases, students may satisfy this requirement simultaneously as they satisfy a general education course requirement or with an elective.

Program Outcomes
Upon successful completion of the Art History & Museum Studies Concentration, students will be able to: Describe art historical knowledge across a range of chronological, cultural, and geographic areas using disciplinary vocabulary Identify and distinguish between various art historical and architectural styles Identify and distinguish between artistic and architectural media and methods of construction Situate artworks, monuments, and buildings within their socio-historical contexts Use historical tools ranging from visual and material artifacts, primary and secondary source material, and other online resources to construct arguments about art and the built environment Summarize and critically appraise art historical sources, research methods and interpretations

Transferring Credits to a Maryland Public Four-Year School
Maryland public four-year colleges and universities accept a minimum of 60 and as many as 70 credits earned toward an associate degree from a Maryland public community college. Students planning to transfer should consult with an AACC academic and transfer advisor; and are advised to obtain permission from the four-year college or university when planning to transfer credits beyond the minimum degree requirements at AACC. More than 70 credits earned at AACC may be transferred if outlined within an established transfer agreement. Current transfer agreements can be found on the AACC Transfer Partners webpage.
