About the Emergency Medical Services Department

Purpose: Start your career as a first responder with the Emergency Medical Technician certificate. The certificate focuses on the fundamentals of EMT training, including control of the emergency scene, patient assessment and management of patients in the field or in transit. Upon successful completion, students will be eligible to take the state and national EMT exams.

Note: The state and national exams have an associated fee. Affiliation with an Emergency Medical Services (EMS) jurisdiction is required to obtain state certification.

Additional Certificate Requirements

Completion of EMT 116  and EMT 117  with a grade of C or better required for each course.

Range of Occupations

  • Emergency Medical Technician in local emergency medical services system, industry or health care setting.

Special Conditions


Financial Aid: This program has not been approved by the U.S. Department of Education for eligibility for federal student aid. Students enrolled in this program may not be eligible to receive financial aid from the U.S. Department of Education (Pell Grants, SEOG, Federal Work-Study, Direct Loans or PLUS loans) or the Maryland Higher Education Commission (Educational Assistance Grants, Senatorial Scholarships or Delegate Scholarships). To graduate with a certificate, students must have demonstrated eligibility for ENG 101  or ENG 101A . Refer to Academic Regulations on Graduation Requirements .

Program Outcomes


Upon successful completion of this program, students will be able to:

  • Apply knowledge of the Emergency Medical Services system, safety/well-being of the EMT, and medical/legal and ethical issues to the provision of emergency care.
  • Apply knowledge of the anatomy and function of all human systems to the practice of emergency medicine. Utilize appropriate terminology, and verbal and nonverbal skills, to communicate with and/or advocate for diverse populations, in varied settings, while assuring personal, crew, scene, and patient safety.
  • Apply knowledge of anatomy and physiology to patient assessment and management in order to assure a patent airway, adequate mechanical ventilation and respiration for patients of all ages.
  • Apply scene information and patient assessment findings (scene size up, primary and secondary assessment, patient history and reassessment) to guide emergency management.
  • Apply knowledge of the causes, pathophysiology and management of shock, respiratory failure or arrest, cardiac failure or arrest, termination of resuscitative efforts and post resuscitation management.
  • Apply knowledge of the medications the EMT may administer to a patient during an emergency and chronic or maintenance medications the patient may be taking.
  • Apply knowledge to provide basic emergency care and transportation based on assessment findings for an acutely ill patient.
  • Apply knowledge to provide basic emergency care and transportation based on assessment findings for an acutely injured patient.
  • Apply knowledge of growth, development, and aging and assessment findings to provide basic emergency care and transportation for a patient with special needs.
  •  Demonstrate knowledge of operational roles and responsibilities to ensure patient, public and personnel safety.
