DHY 110 - Dental Hygiene Theory 22 credit hours - Two hours of lecture weekly; one term. Examine the theories and practice of dental hygiene care with emphasis on advanced instrumentation techniques and supportive dental hygiene therapy, including tobacco cessation intervention, fluoridation and fluoride therapy, supplementary aids, chemotherapeutics, and desensitization. Describe the dental hygiene process of care emphasizing treatment planning.
Prerequisite(s): DHY 100 , DHY 102 , DHY 104 , DHY 106 , and DHY 108 with a grade of C or better in each course.
Corequisite(s): DHY 112 , DHY 114 , and DHY 116.
Course Outcomes:
- Explain and implement HIPAA regulations and discuss the consequences for non-compliance.
- Evaluate the oral health needs of the client and develop appropriate and individualized self-care regimens with respect to the goals, values, beliefs, and preferences of the client.
- Formulate dental hygiene diagnosis and develop dental hygiene care plans and oral health education strategies for clients exhibiting a variety of dental and periodontal conditions.
- Discuss appropriate use and indications for chemotherapeutic agents, topical and local anesthetics.
- Describe the contents involved in sharpening dental instruments and justify its importance.
- Describe the characteristics, indications, and procedures for use of a variety of supplementary cleaning aids including power toothbrushes.
- Identify the purpose and criteria for measurement scoring methods, range of scores, and reference and interpretation scales for a variety of dental indices.
