DHY 114 - Periodontology

2 credit hours - Two hours of lecture weekly; one term.
Describe the anatomy of the periodontium and the etiology of periodontal disease. Classify patients based on periodontal criteria and identify optimal strategies to help reverse periodontitis. Describe procedures to complete periodontal evaluation for all classifications, identify best options for treatment, develop a treatment plan, review systemic health conditions, discuss prevention strategies, conduct risk assessment, and identify the use and implementation of different home care aids. Describe how to assess and consider the patient’s beliefs and personal opinions on oral health, and provide patient education using clear and effective communication.

Prerequisite(s): DHY 100 , DHY 102 , DHY 104 DHY 106 , and DHY 108  with a grade of C or better in each course.

Corequisite(s): DHY 110 , DHY 112 , and DHY 116 .

Course Outcomes:
  1. Review how healthy and diseased periodontium differ biologically and anatomically and identify risk factors associated with periodontal diseases.
  2. Distinguish different classifications of periodontitis.
  3. Design a treatment plan to help patients achieve oral health goals based on patients’ needs.
  4. Evaluate and translate radiographs, periodontal charting, medical history, and other evaluation tools to help communicate dental hygiene diagnosis to the patient.
  5. Describe nonsurgical periodontal therapy, irrigation methods, and chemical agents used in periodontal care.
  6. Demonstrate an understanding of how different perspectives and beliefs affect oral health.  
  7. Demonstrate effective communication skills for patient education.
  8. Document patient cases in written clinic notes.
