PTA 104 - Physical Therapist Assistant 26 credit hours - 45 hours of lecture and 90 hours of college laboratory over nine week term. Introduces theory regarding the concepts of pain, peripheral vascular disease and wound care. Includes theory and skill development in modalities and relaxation techniques with expected competency in specific units. Lab fee $300.
Prerequisite(s): PTA 102 , PTA 106 and BIO 232 or BIO 234 .
Corequisite(s): PTA 105 .

Course Outcomes: Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
1. Demonstrate competence and safety in the application of physical agents within the PT plan of care.
2. Recognize the role of the PTA in modifying or deferring interventions due to contraindications or change in patient status.
3. Model effective communication when teaching patients and family/care providers.
4. Apply the essential elements of SOAP documentation for interventions involving physical agents.
5. Recognize the role of the PTA in discharging patients within the PT plan of care:
a. identify skilled need
6. Demonstrate competence with data collection relating to the administration of physical agents.
7. Relate pain perception and control theories to the application of physical agents:
a. effects of cultural and family dynamics background on the perception of pain
b. use of various pain scales
8. Relate tissue response to injury to the application of physical agents:
a. pathologies of the peripheral vascular system
b. treatment of wounds and selection of wound care dressings
9. Demonstrate competence with standard precautions and sterile technique with wound management.
10. Model cultural competence during the administration of physical agents.
11. Sequence the application of physical agents during treatments within the PT plan of care.
