DHY 220 - Dental Hygiene Theory 5

2 credit hours - Two hours lecture weekly; one term.
Apply previously acquired theoretical and clinical skills to advance to proficiency level. Demonstrate proficiency in dental practice management, the business of dentistry, resume writing, interviewing, the dental hygiene profession and modern-day workforce, and prepare for the national board examination. Discuss professional ethics and dental jurisprudence, professional organizations, and issues involving the dental hygiene profession. Describe the laws and rules governing the practice of dental hygiene in the state of Maryland. Examine practice management skills and employment preparation, including resumes and interview techniques.

Prerequisite(s): DHY 200 , DHY 202 , DHY 204 , and DHY 206 with a grade of C or better in each course.

Corequisite(s): DHY 222 , DHY 224 , and DHY 226 .

Discuss how dental practices operate as a business, the dental hygiene profession and modern-day workforce, national board examination, and interviewing skills.
Describe the management of patients who are medically compromised, patients with various mental and physical disabilities, patients with substance abuse disorders, and patients with different oral health needs and different psychological beliefs.
Evaluate nonsurgical scaling and root planing, adjunctive therapy, types of indices and scoring methods, desensitizing agents, fluoride, and teeth bleaching in patient care.
Explain the use of basic and advanced instrumentation techniques in the modern-day workforce.
Describe strategies for success in today’s modern dental practice.
Describe the process for registering and preparing for the national board exam.
