DHY 222 - Dental Hygiene Clinical 5

4 credit hours - Sixteen hours of clinic weekly; one term.
Demonstrate and apply new and previously learned clinical skills, techniques and responsibilities of an entry-level dental hygienist. Emphasize fine tuning clinical skills, comprehensive treatment planning, self-assessment, and independent decision making. Identify skills to assist in the transition to dental hygiene practice beyond graduation. Lab fee $350. Clinical fee $100.

Prerequisite(s): DHY 200 , DHY 202 , DHY 204 , and DHY 206  with a grade of C or better in each course.

Corequisite(s): DHY 220 , DHY 224 , and DHY 226 .

Course Outcomes:
  1. Apply advanced dental hygiene theory and care to implement the modifications required for the treatment of clients with special needs.
  2. Integrate and describe all aspects of dental hygiene care on a variety of clients.
  3. Analyze the need for the application of chemotherapeutic agents. 
  4. Compare and contrast appropriate levels of sedation for optimal patient care.
  5. Practice in accordance with the Maryland State Board of Dental Examiners rules and regulations governing the administration of local anesthesia and nitrous oxide and oxygen sedation.
  6. Design a plan to control pain and anxiety during treatment through the use of acceptable clinical and behavior management strategies.
